Costa Coffee to have use of the new paved area?

Can anyone confirm or deny the rumour that we've heard that Costa Coffee has managed to negotiate exclusive rights to the use of the new paved area in the Square as an alfresco extension to their franchise?  If this is the case I think it's appalling that a national chain has cornered the market!

I wouldn't be surprised it Weatherspoons bought it to open up another pub and kill off all the others in the town.

Interesting that the Lloyds bank in the square is still on the list of the 620 branches that are schedule for sale. Perhaps there is a chance that someone will take the option and utilise the square effectively at the moment though very nice it lacks any character.

The message I have just posted is the response the Council has emailed to me when I contacted them about this issue. A definite 'Watch this space' time.

East Dorset District Council can confirm that it has not been in negotiations with any interested party for exclusive rights to operate an outdoor café facility in The Square, Wimborne. Indeed, the District Council's Resources Committee on Wednesday 13 June will be asked to consider the following recommendation:

That no further action be taken to select a service provider to operate an outdoor cafe facility in Wimborne Square at the present time and that the matter be reconsidered in 2013.

If we had a local business that fronted onto the square and had the capacity to cope with the demand I would support it but there are none. Only a change of use and a new business in one of the shops directly on the square would meet the requirement and that is never going to happen. Costa is popular one of the few places at the weekend open on a Sunday and people like it. If they get the use I will be the first to take a seat and be happy to do so. Only a big company such as this will ever be able to afford the rental for the space.
