Mid Dorset and North Poole MP Annette Brooke is to back the Daylight Saving Bill to look at the benefits of moving the clocks forward an hour.

The bill calls on the Government to hold a comprehensive review of the benefits and costs of putting the clocks forward an hour throughout the UK, which would result in lighter evenings all year round. I know this isn't strictly speaking about Wimborne, but I thought it was an interesting topic for discussion.

So what are some of the benefits? Three of the benefits mentioned are saving lives on our roads, creating much needed jobs in the tourism sector and reducing the fear of crime on dark evenings.

Saving lives on our roads: OK so putting the clocks forward an hour would make it lighter in the evenings making travel easier, but that would also make it darker in the mornings for longer for those heading out for work. The idea might save lives in the evening, but lives would be put more at risk in the mornings, especially during cold or wet periods of the year when the sun hasn't had chance to warm the roads up before a large volume of commuters venture out.

Creating much needed jobs in the tourism sector: I could see this working and creating a much larger income for businesses, with people enjoying the extra of daylight after work and making the most of their evenings.

Reducing the fear of crime on dark evenings: Again this would be a great help and would give criminals less time to operate in the dark while many people are around.

So two out of the three suggested benefits work for me, what do you think?
