I have received a copy of the official final figures for the Waitrose development ballot conducted by the Electoral Reform Services, which ended on Monday 12th December 2011. The results are as follows:

Number of eligible participants:

1,710

Total number of responses:

973

Turnout:

56.9%

Number of responses found to be invalid:

5

Total number of valid responses to be counted:

968

1. I am opposed to the supermarket development on the Cricket Ground but the store is now in place hence the town has to live with it.

112 - 11.6% of the valid responses

2. The supermarket on the Cricket Ground that is now trading is proving to be an asset for the town.

719 - 74.3% of the valid responses

3. The supermarket development on the Cricket Ground should not have been permitted; I do not wish the store to remain there and support the Town Green Application

137 - 14.1% of the valid responses

I wanted to print the results in full so Wimborne residents could see the figures for themselves - Section 1 of the results I believe will be of particular interest to Minty20 – and end any lingering doubt about the ballot.

Waitrose is here to stay, let's hope they can now buy the land needed to build the bridge to connect the town.

Sorry that should have read - shouldn't hold my breath. That'll teach me to type and eat crisps at the same time.

I've already written to them, but the town clerk who gave me their addresses told me I should hold my breath for a reply...I'm still waiting.

So is the next campaign for Wimburnians to persuade the owners of Crown Mead to: 1) ask a more reasoable price for the land that abuts the River Allen where Waitrose would like to build the bridge. 2) maintain Crown Mead to a reasonable standard, perhaps to begin by cleaning up Eastbrook Row.
