Traffic Regulations Flouted In Wimborne Square

Wimborne Town Councillor Ann Roberts has presented the planning committee with a report calling for better policing of traffic regulations in and around the Square, after noting an increase in motorists flouting the law. Councillor Roberts suggests the situation has gotten a lot worse since the Square refurbishment.

Councillor Roberts hints that the increase could possibly be due to the loss of car park spaces after the refurbishment and some businesses reporting a small loss in customer footfall since the Square revamp seems to support this.

However, I don't think this is true. I wrote about the traffic and parking violations back in April and asked the question where are the civil enforcement officers, or whatever they're called these days? I tried to find an answer to this question by contacting East Dorset District Council who are responsible for policing street parking. Not surprisingly I didn't receive a reply. After I wrote the article I have only seen a traffic enforcement officer once in the town on my almost daily visits since.

I don't think there has been an increase as such; the problem has always been there, I think it's just more noticeable because the pedestrian area is much larger.

Whatever the supposed cause something certainly needs to be done about the situation and daily patrols by civil enforcement officers are the more likely answer.

Still, I'm glad someone else has raised the issue of illegal parking in the town.

Residents have been saying it for ages. Funny they now only pay attention when a councillor speaks out and brings the problem to their attention. Somebody, somewhere isn't doing their job properly.

There has always been bad parking in Wimborne. Why they haven't noticed it before? Maybe they are only noticing it now because their precious new square is being parked on and they're worried it'll make the place look untidy? Hopefully they'll do something about it now?
