Wimborne Businesses Warned To Be On The Lookout For Counterfeit Booze

Dorset County Council's Trading Standards have put out a warning to local businesses and the general public after seizing illegal vodka from a retailer in the East of the county, which contained an amount of methanol ten times the permitted level.

Methanol is primarily used as a laboratory solvent and can be used as fuel in internal combustion engines, and while the levels found recently in seized bottles shouldn't endanger health is does highlight the lack of quality control on counterfeit and illegally produced alcohol.

Retailers are being urged to double check where and from whom they purchase their stock and to make sure they keep good records, so if the product is found to be unsafe, or a danger to health, swift action can be taken to trace the source and remove the product from sale. If traceable officers can suspend the supply of suspect stock pending test results and can seize stock if they have sufficient grounds to suspect it isn't genuine.

If businesses buy untraceable stock from cold callers just to save a few quid, they risk losing their alcohol licence, could face possible prosecution and worse of all risk putting their customers heath in danger.
