Wimborne: How Should We Combat Such Riots In The Future?

After several days of rioting in cities around the country earlier last week I read today in the Sunday Times it was being suggested that young people caught rioting should be given national service, but should the government go one step further and reinstate national service for everyone between the ages of 16 and 25?

Wimborne: Should young people be made to do national service to stop them committing crimes?
I just don't believe the excuses given by those who took part in last week's disgusting actions that left three dead in Birmingham. You don't just get caught up in the moment, especially not at 3am. If you're out in a middle of a riot at that time of the morning then you planned to be there in the first place and anything you get because of this you deserve.
I did national service during the sixties and I wouldn't be the same person I am today if I hadn't. Modern society is far too soft on young people and criminals, too worried about their human rights to properly punish them when step out of line. They are also driven by a lust for material goods without having to work hard and save up to buy something they want. TV tells them they can have it now and pay for it later, with no accountability what-so-ever.
For me national service is the only way to go. Give the youth of today some discipline, give them a chance to respect themselves and others and above all give them a direction in life.

Yes, I saw that. Playing on the call for national service, but falling short again. But yes, the looters should be made to clean up after the riots, so they can see exactly what they've done and who they've harmed.

ReportAnd they haven't DomCar. The Deputy PM wants the youths caught looting to serve 'National Service' in the community, helping to clear up after the riots. That's NOT National Service!!!! Yet again another attempt to grab the headlines without doing very much. It's always the same, they say they'll do something but only ever do the minimum they can in case they put voters off. They should stop worrying about votes and start governing. Action is what we need, not newspaper headlines.

ReportI think national service is a great idea. I was a bit wayward as a teenager and it would have helped me find some direction in life back then; my father even tried to get me to join the army at one point. I think it would cut down anti-social behavior and crime considerable too, but unfortunately I don't think the present government have the balls to go through with it.
