Dorset Police have arrested 100 people for drink driving during June as part of this summer's campaign against drink drivers.

Despite extensive local media coverage the figure has increased by 12 since last year and 19 from 2010. The majority of the offenders, four fifths, were men, with 43 out of the 100 being under 30 years of age. During the June campaign a quarter of the 100 arrests were made following a collision, showing that collisions really do happen under the influence of alcohol.

The message is really simple, don't risk lives by drinking and driving. You are not only putting your life in danger but those of other road users too.

If you're going out with a group of friends drinking make sure one of you is the designated driver and alternate each time you go out. If you don't have far to travel either walk or take a taxi. If it's a celebration that you simply can't miss out on then book overnight accommodation. Do you really want to risk your licence and possibly your job, as well as your life and the lives of others just for a few drinks?

If you suspect someone is drink driving it's your duty to report them by dialling 999.

I agree, punishments should be a higher and I also think that anyone disqualified must retake both parts of their test before being allowed their licence back. They should have to prove they are fit to be behind the wheel again.

Punishments need to be higher and education better. A friend of mine got banned for a year and had to attend an alcohol awareness scheme. When they finished they went up the pub. Hardly encouraging, is it?

I'm quite surprised how many young people still drink and drive, considering all the educating and anti drink drive messages everywhere. Maybe it's a culture of one more won't hurt that keeps it happening. They get away with it once and think nothing of it. In reality they're just idiots with no sense at all.
