Wimborne School Children Get Their Own Gardens To Care For

Wimborne school children can now get stuck in to working on their new garden project thanks to help from local garden centres.

The lucky children at St John's School in Wimborne are now developing green fingers thanks to a new garden in the school grounds. The school, which is working towards its Eco School status, has in its garden a vegetable patch, raised beds (for flowers I presume) and a sensory garden for the pupils to look after. It presents the children with a great opportunity to get stuck in and learn first hand about plants and what it takes to grow their own vegetables, including lettuces and sunflowers, and maintaining a working garden.

The children also have the chance to maintain their own bug hotels, which are there to help to teach the children how some insects, or mini beasts as they are sometimes called, can be beneficial to plants and vegetables. I can help thinking the bug hotels will prove to be the most popular attraction. Thanks to the Haskins Garden Centre, who donated some of the plants, and the Wimborne In Bloom volunteers the children had help with the initial planting.

The school garden, also sponsored by Glenacres, Knoll Gardens and the Wimborne Garden Centre, was officially opened Mayor Terry Wheeler.

Health & safety, with that and teachers not being allowed to restrain unruly children when they misbehave, no wonder we have a generation of bored kids who just want to create mayhem all the time. Bringing back National Service is long over due!

Anyway, glad to see these kids are being taught something useful.

I agree Bette_Noir. I remember when I was at school our woodwork teacher asked us why we scored the wood before we used the chisel - the answer: to make sure we only took off the wood we needed to. He then proceeded to show what would happen if we didn't score the wood and a chunk of wood flew off and hit a kid in the face. The kid wasn't hurt, but it was a lesson we learnt that's for sure. The health and safety lot should tone it down a bit and let kids learn from their own mistakes and accidents.

Rather than selling the produce I hope that the school looks into teaching the kids how to prepare and cook the vegetables. Over the past few years there has been a decline of need-to-know skills being taught ie: Cooking, sewing, metal work, wood work. These together with logic and common sense need to be brought back into the curriculum. The attitude of citing "can't do that it's against health and safety" needs to be booted well an truly out of the education system.

The garden is great, lots of work was put in by all the organisations mentioned above, and parents/grandparents in a "ground force" style makeover. They will be featured on ITV's Daybreak programme on Friday 3rd June if anyone wants to watch.
