Should Wimborne Schools Notify Parents Of Illness Outbreaks?

Should Wimborne's schools notify parents when their students are hit by illness?

After the recent round of Chicken Pox and a diarrhoea and vomiting bug in schools in Colehill, I was wondering if the schools should inform parents of any outbreak, so they can decide for themselves if their child should go to school and be exposed to it?

Both of our kids have been ill recently, with Chicken Pox and a sickness bug, and it's been a difficult time looking after them. It was only yesterday though that I learnt that the sickness bug had spread through the school my eldest attends. It got me to thinking, should we have been told by the school of this bug?

I don't think we should have been, after all if schools informed parents every time they suspected a bug or illness outbreak the classrooms would be empty most of the time and our children would never go to school. It's always difficult juggling work commitments and looking after sick children, and to be honest it can be a giant pain in the bum, but catching these illnesses helps to bolster our children's immune systems.

When I was a child I never thought twice about picking up food and eating it after dropping it on the floor, and I think these days we're far too cautious and overprotective of our children. I say let them get dirty, let them be exposed to sickness outbreaks, let them eat food off the floor and then we'll have children better prepared to deal with bigger bugs and illnesses when they come along.

It seems EDCC do send out warnings. I've been informed a letter is doing the rounds telling parents about a lot of recent local cases of Mumps and Measles. I have that to look forward to then...JOY!

The very reason there are outbreaks is because as a society we're far too paranoid about anyone getting small illnesses like an upset stomach. How can you build up a resistance to anything if you're cleaning your hands with anti-bacterial soap every thirty seconds?
