Wimborne Square Makeover To Go Ahead In January

Wimborne Square will finally get its long awaited makeover when work starts on pedestrianising the area in January.

The £410,000 project will see the loss of car park spaces in the square, which will be replaced by a wider pavement, and an area that can be used for public entertainment. Safer crossing points will also be introduced and it is hoped the wider pavement area will help encourage al fresco dining. The money for the project has been provided by the East Dorset District Council, Waitrose, Dorset County Council and Wimborne Town Council and hasn't come out of the B.I.D funds.

The plan is a big step in helping to improve trade to those businesses operating in and around the square, as well as improving safety for pedestrians. Shoppers will now be able to walk from shop to shop without having to worry about cars and crossing the road.

As a parent I have always found it difficult to negotiate the Square with a toddler and a pushchair, trying to avoid the never ending circling cars, as their drivers desperately hunt for that converted car parking space so they can quickly pop into a shop. Hopefully they will now park in one of the larger car parks around Wimborne and spend more time and money in those shops that so desperately need the business.

Am all in favour of some pedestrianization, but please leave large spaces for deliveries van and enforce no parking in loading bays. Because when they get filled up with car drivers the lorries and vans have to cause an obstruction to deliver. Thus blocking passing traffic or the pavements.

I'm fed up of having drivers stare me down when I cross the road in the Square, as if I am some kind of inconvenience who dares to slow them down, who can't be bothered to stop but instead pass me missing me by inches while I'm still crossing. I'll be glad when the work's done.

What about the driver of the red 4x4 who continually rammed a female driver's car around the Square a couple of weeks ago?
