Wimborne Support For Waitrose

Keep Wimborne Town Green (KWTG) have decided to not to pursue the issue of a public inquiry, due to go ahead between the 23-25th January 2012, after the ballot of the Wimborne Town electorate showed the vast majority of residents were now in favour of Waitrose.

Of those polled 50% have so far replied and 87% of the returned ballot papers were in favour of Waitrose, or of the opinion that even though the development shouldn't have been permitted the town now has to live with it.

Mr Atlay, spokesperson for KWTG, laid the blame totally at the feet of District councillors who he said, "with some honourable exceptions, wholly ignored," the initial majority against the Waitrose build and that, "without the support of local politicians, it was impossible to prevail." District councillor and Town Mayor Robin Cook was delighted the public inquiry had been withdrawn saying, "The cricket ground was never a town green and the application was without foundation. As I go around the town I find there is tremendous support for Waitrose."

So it seems that despite initial opposition to Waitrose when planning permission was applied for some of those who originally opposed the Waitrose build have now reluctantly resigned themselves to the fact Waitrose is here to stay.

I have just picked up the thread here and read with interest the diverse views. Waitrose is here to stay and that was always to be the case from the day they broke ground to build it. As a relative newcomer to the town I use the shop more than I thought I would, but I always try and get what I need from one of the independant traders first, especially fresh fruit and veg. if apples were supposed to be in shrink wrap they would have been made that way. However if it was not there I would go out of the town completely and no one locally would benefit. The alternative is the Co-Op enough said.

Minty20 if you're still around you might like to read the article with the following title: The Final Results For Wimborne's Waitrose Ballot

    You might find this interesting.

"Reluctantly"...Minty20 you really are being very childish and I would agree with domcar in that you have attacked him personally for an article which IS balanced. You most definitely own him an apology.

I think if he had been biased as you claim he would have removed your comments, instead he left your opinions for all to read, which in my book speaks volumes about him.

For the record I have supported Waitrose from the very beginning and I don't find this article to be one sided in any way. Indeed I look forward to reading articles on this site because they give the people of Wimborne a chance to have their say on issues that effect them directly...where else can you do that? I love reading other people's opinions, especially about Waitrose, and I hope domcar hasn't been put off by you dragging this intelligent debate down to the level of a playground squabble.

Oh dear, yes the results show Wimborne now supports Waitrose, no problem with that, but..... it's your use of the word 'reluctantly' that I have an issue with. Unless there was a specific question on the ballot or any other survey which asks a question along the lines of 'Have you very reluctantly/reluctantly/quite reluctantly/not reluctantly (delete as applicable) accepted Waitrose is now here to stay' and a majority of people answer 'reluctantly' then you can't say that Wimborne people have 'reluctantly' accepted Waitrose because you don't have the evidence. Without evidence you are projecting your own opinions on to other people, without concrete evidence. I was against Waitrose but now think it's great, however, I have not reluctantly accepted it, I have done so very happily indeed, and I know there are a lot of people who have done the same.
I have not 'aggressively attacked you ...personally' I have commented on the fact that I find a KWTG partiality which does not reflect the wide spectrum of opinion that Wimborne people hold. I note that my comment regarding the use of the word 'morons' has gone uncommented. That is a very offensive word to many people including myself, clearly I wouldn't have got away with it whereas Baxi22 has done so. Draw your own conclusions.
Thank you for your kind invitation/suggestion that I no longer log on to the site or comment, I would be delighted to accept. Many thanks for providing the opportunity for me to say 'I rest my case' I think there is more than enough new evidence to conclude that partiality is still alive and well on this site.

What an absolute load of nonsense these comments are! As a Wimborne resident I can safely say that myself and a number of people I know who live in the town HAVE had to resign themselves to the fact that Waitrose is staying. I don't like it, but it's here to stay. In my opinion some of the comments given here are unneccessary and actually quite vindictive - the writer is just doing his job, the facts have been reported (both here and in local papers) and people are quite capable of making their own minds up. I enjoy reading this site but this thread has really got my back up. So childish.
