Wimborne's new eco-friendly Queen Elizabeth's School will open a little later than originally scheduled, but happily still on budget. The school, with its environmentally friendly design including solar/wind power energy collection, rain water recycling and low energy use, was due to open at the start of September and will now open when students return after half term in October. The building will actually be ready before the half-term move, but unfortunately not in time for the beginning of the school year in September.

The delay to the opening is due mostly to the severe weather last winter holding up workmen, but Dorset County Council are happy the work is now progressing well and in the final stages. The finishing touches are being applied including landscaping the grounds, laying carpets, moving in furniture and installing the new IT systems.

Headteacher Andy Puttock believes the half term delay will be a good thing allowing new students to acclimatise to their new environment, familiarising themselves with the new layout, with help from teachers who already know where everything is. To facilitate this the headteacher plans to take students across to the new building for visits.

Wimborne's new £52.6million Queen Elizabeth's School will be a national example of sustainable, environmentally friendly design.
