Motorcycles: Is it speed that kills?
A fifty-five year old man was tragically killed during rush hour on Friday morning at the junction of Wareham Road and Waterloo Road in Corfe Mullen, just outside the Naked Cross Nursery, when his motorcycle collided with a white Volkswagen van. Two ambulance crews attended the crash, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene. This tragic accident highlights the danger motorcycles present to their riders.
Dorset road traffic statistics show that motorcyclists are three times more likely to be involved in accidents than car drivers. The statistics also show that between 2006 and 2009 there were 118 accidents involving motorcycles with a cc capacity of 500 or above, with 18 of those accidents fatal.
Compare this to accidents with motorcycles with a capacity of less than 500 cc’s which totalled 84 over the last three tears with not fatalities and a clear picture appears, showing that speed is the biggest killer for motorcyclists.
Then the solution seems simple, ban all motorcycles above 500 ccs and drastically cut the number of accidents. It has always seemed rather daft to me that the speed limit in this country is 70 miles per hour and yet cars, and motorcycles especially, are built to not only exceed this speed limit but also to reach it in the fastest time possible. Why? If all vehicles were limited in their speed to 70 miles per hour, with a slower acceleration there would be significantly less accidents, especially fatal ones. Racing tracks were built for speed, not roads.
What do you think?
