Pupils of Wimborne First School have had great fun learning all about the growth and development of fish after being given a rare opportunity to rear their own trout at the school.

Wimborne First School Students release trout into the River Allen
The children were given the trout as eggs in January, which were then placed, in a tank outside the head teacher’s office where the pupils could watch their progress. The children helped to look after the trout by cleaning the tank three times a day and feeding them when they eventually hatched. Once big enough the trout were released into the River Alan in early April and the Year 4 children were able to watch the trout swim away on an underwater camera thanks to the Wessex Salmon and Rivers Trust who supported the scheme.
You can often see trout swimming in the River Alan so it’s good to know their numbers have been added to and that the pupils of Wimborne First School got the chance to be a part of the scheme. Not only did the children get to learn about the responsibility of caring for fish but also for their surroundings as well, a valuable lesson indeed.
It’s also good to know that the River Allen is clean enough to support such wildlife despite the odd bit of unwanted rubbish that is dumped in there every so often.
